Frequently Asked Questions
who are you and what do you do?
Glad you asked! My name is Jamie Kelm and I am a Master Reiki Practitioner, Teacher, and Health Coach. I have several offerings geared towards helping people get "un-stuck." Often when we feel like we are not moving forward or repeating the same patterns over and over again, it can be a result of feeling like there is something holding us back or we are unclear about where we are going. Sometimes physical issues manifest such as chronic pain and extra weight that can place even more of a barrier between us and what we desire to have/be/see. By working with me as either a Reiki client or a health coach client (or both together!) we can work on smoothing out those energetic blocks, getting you crystal clear about what you want, and come up with a plan to get you there.
What is Reiki and how can it benefit me?
Reiki (ray-key) is a unique and gentle type of energetic therapy that can aid you in connecting deeply with your body and spirit to bring forth a greater sense of well-being and abundance. The word "Reiki" can be broken down into two words: Rei (God's wisdom or higher power) and Ki (life force energy). A Reiki treatment involves a practitioner channeling energy from a higher energetic source to a client to aid their body's natural healing process. This can be done either in-person or through distance sessions.
As a Reiki practitioner, I believe that all beings are connected energetically. Not just to the life around us in our world, but also to a great energy Source that is older and greater than we can truly fathom. When we experience struggles such as illnesses, injuries, chronic stress, trauma, pain (physical, emotional, spiritual, etc.), or behaviors and thought patterns that harm us, it can block our energetic flow (or Chakras). These experiences can cause our energetic flow to become "clogged up" or feel as if we are twisted up in knots.
If you feel like you have lost connection with yourself, or something feels off balance or just "not right," Reiki is an excellent way of smoothing out those knots and fostering a deep connection with your body and soul. It can be used in conjunction with Western medicine and is slowly but surely making its way into doctors' offices and hospitals.
what does a reiki session look like?
In a typical Reiki session with me, we will start by having a conversation about what you are currently struggling with and what changes you want the Reiki to assist with (such as having more mental clarity, more energy, deepening your intuition, assisting your body's natural ability to heal itself, etc.). Any questions or concerns you have about receiving Reiki will be answered. After our conversation we will begin the actual Reiki portion of our session. That can look different every time because we are energetic beings that are constantly shifting and changing so a "one size fits all" approach will not even work for the same person session to session! After the Reiki portion I will share what I felt and experienced during the session and in turn I invite my clients to share what they experienced with me.
For distance Reiki, we will have our initial conversation via Skype then schedule a time for me to send the Reiki. Afterwards, we can have another conversation about what was experienced through either Skype or through email.
HOW many reiki sessions do i need to notice results?
This is a question I've been asked numerous times (and I've even asked it myself!) and the answer is- "it varies, depends, and is up to you." Some people find benefit in receiving Reiki at regular intervals while others prefer it on a more "as needed" basis. Ultimately, there is no "right" or "wrong" way to receive and experience Reiki so I always suggest to my clients that they follow their intuition and do what feels right for them.
What is a Health Coach?
A health coach is a wellness professional who has been trained to act as a guide and mentor to support someone who wants to improve their health. Health coaches fill that gap between wanting to make lifestyle changes to improve their overall well-being, but are unsure how to take that first step or make the changes stick. Your health coach will work very closely with you as you make incremental changes to reach your health goals.
What is an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach?
Health coaches that have completed the health coach training program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) earn the distinction of Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. There are many training programs for health coaches, and IIN is one of the global leaders of the health coach movement. You can learn more about the school here.
How Can Working With a Health Coach BENEFIT Me?
Lots of ways! A health coach can assist you with:
- Creating healthier lifestyle habits
- Eating more abundantly healthful foods
- Understanding and reducing cravings
- Mastering holistic stress management techniques
- Helping you gain clarity around your goals
- Assisting you in making safe, incremental changes
- Feeling an improved sense of well-being
- Feeling more "at-ease" and comfortable in your body
- Offering external accountability and continuous support
- ... and much more!
It's important to select a health coach that you feel a connection with because that coach will be your go-to person for accountability and support throughout your work together.
What is the Difference between a health coach, nutritionist, and dietitian?
can we combine reiki and health coaching? what will that look like?
We certainly can and it's something worth exploring! I am happy to offer either service separately or combine them into a package. For all my current coaching clients, I offer a discounted rate for Reiki services. And for Reiki clients, I offer a discount on their first month of coaching. For more information about pricing, please check out my services page or contact me directly.
What is Your Approach to working with me as a health coach?
Let me share with you the cornerstones that make up the foundation of my coaching practice:
Bio-individuality: You know that saying "one man's food is another man's poison?" That is more true than I can even begin to emphasize here! My practice is heavily rooted in the concept of bio-individuality which means that every body is different and no one diet or lifestyle will work for everyone. I do not believe that a "blanket approach" to wellness is beneficial for most people and is part of the reason why diets and other health "fads" tend to not be sustainable long term. It's crucial that I assist my clients in figuring out what works well for them, as well as what does not work, and develop a sustainable, step-by-step action plan for them to reach their goals.
Creating a Safe Space: In order for deep change to occur, it's important that you feel safe and supported. As a health coach, I foster a safe and supporting environment for you to share your struggles (and triumphs!). I maintain a judgement-free zone in every session- period.
Discover Your Why: True and lasting change must come from that deep place within you that is fed up with how things are and needs for them to be different (your why). If you do not connect to that place as step one, you are setting yourself up for a constant battle as you force your body to do things it is unaccustomed to (your how) and will likely not see the results you want to see (your what). If you start with the what by saying “I want to lose 10 pounds” then once the 10 pounds are gone, it will likely come back. As opposed to saying “I want to have enough energy to be able to keep up with my kids at the park” or “I want to feel more comfortable in my body.” Or even, “I watched a family member suffer with <x> illness and I don’t want that to be my path.” Those why statements are so much more powerful and will begin a more internal and deep change within you.
Primary and Secondary Foods: Secondary foods encompass everything that we ingest: Foods, drinks, medications, supplements, etc. Primary foods are all of the things that nourish us on a deeper level: Our relationships, career, home environment, emotional well-being, etc. Balance and harmony in all of these areas is the key to abundant health.
Crowding Out: My approach in helping clients who want to eat in a more healthful way is to assist them in crowding out the "unhealthy" or undesirable foods with healthy, nutrient dense alternatives. So, it's not about taking away something but rather adding in so much goodness that you no longer crave the foods that are not serving you. This has to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis since we all have different eating habits and preferences.
My role is never to tell my clients what they should or should not do- it's about helping them gain clarity and tap into their own intuition to guide them.
For more information about this, check out my blog post 'Why So Many New Year's Resolutions Don't Work.'
Will I have to give up my favorite foods if i work with you?
As a health coach, I never tell anyone what they should or shouldn't eat. My role is to educate and help YOU figure out what foods work best for your own body. What you may find after working me and incorporating more healthful, whole foods into your life is that your cravings for the "unhealthy" stuff goes down. Your taste buds may change to the point where you are craving foods you never imagined you'd crave (I get some pretty intense cravings for lettuce these days). All I ask of my clients is that they approach our sessions, and this whole process, with an open mind and are willing to try things that are a bit outside of their comfort zone. And once you feel ready, we may eventually "crowd out" or replace certain foods with more nutrient dense options. But ultimately, what you choose to fuel your body with is totally up to you. Food is only one aspect of what we will be working on together.
